Callum ‘The One’ Johnson on fighting Frank Buglioni
Unbeaten Light Heavyweight Callum Johnson (16-0) is in line for a shot at the British title against Frank Buglioni (20-2-1), after the British Boxing Board of Control ordered a fight with the ‘Wise Guy’.
Both are promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. Johnson, states that he is “waiting on everything to be finalised and confirmed” ahead of what is sure to be a terrific showdown. Buglioni provides a good test for Johnson and ‘The One’ believes that the Enfield man is a very good strong fighter and a step up on paper, but thinks his last opponent Willbeforce Shihepo is a better fighter.
If Johnson comes through the test of Buglioni, then the board had issued an eliminator for the British title between stablemate Hosea Burton and Anthony Yarde, a fight that the Lincolnshire man believes Burton would win. Despite the board ordering the eliminator, news has recently broken that Yarde will now instead face the undefeated Ryan Ford which will be an eliminator for the Commonwealth Light Heavyweight title.
Burton and his team are now left waiting to find out whether they will be issued with a new opponent for the eliminator, or whether they will become mandatory for the British title. If Johnson comes out victorious against Buglioni, then it could see the two left in a situation where they will be in line to face each other, something Johnson said, “he has never thought about and never would”.
Johnson, who is trained by Ring Magazine Trainer of the year for 2016 Joe Gallagher, wants to win the British title before moving straight onto the European, saying that “winning the British, Commonwealth and European title in his career is something that he would be very proud of doing”. He also added that when his boxing career comes to an end he would like to be remembered as “A kid that came from a small town that achieved some fantastic things when all the odds have been stacked against him”.
Fighting in a division that has had a lot of publicity in recent months with Andre Ward taking on Sergey Kovalev twice and with the domestic scene booming, ‘The One’ believes that unified Light Heavyweight Champion Ward, is currently the best in the division right now. Rumours are that WBC champion Badou Jack and Nathan Cleverley are set to be confirmed for the Floyd Mayweather v Connor McGregor undercard. It is clear to see that Johnson is involved in the division at a great time!
Hopefully confirmation of the British showdown with Frank Buglioni will be confirmed very soon and from all at ‘The Boxing Reporter’ we wish Callum Johnson all the very best in the fight and his future career.
