World Boxing Super Series – Super Middleweight Division
The World Boxing Series began with a gala draw on Saturday night in the Grimaldi Forum, Monte Carlo.
The tournament pits 8 Super-Middleweights against each other in a knockout format. WBA World Champion George Groves was ranked number 1, and chose to face fellow Brit Jamie Cox, in the first quarter final.
Groves, comes into the tournament on the back of his world title triumph over Russia’s Fedor Chudinov, and stepped down from his podium and pointed to Cox as the man he wanted to face first up. The unbeaten Jamie Cox, recently signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom stable, and is coming off the back of a TKO victory against Ivan Jukic at the O2 Arena, the stage for his world title shot against George Groves on October 14.
The next fighter to chose his opponent was unbeaten Brit Callum Smith, who chose to take on Sweden’s Erik Skoglund who also brings with him an unbeaten record. Smith, was suppose to be fighting for the WBC Super Middleweight title, against Anthony Dirrell but after that fight never materialised, he chose to enter the knockout tournament.
Another Brit, Chris Eubank Jr, will take part in the tournament if he can overcome, Artur Abraham this Saturday at Wembley Arena, and will face Turkey’s Anvi Yildrim. Eubank Jr, will be making the first defence of his IBO world title against Abraham, after stopping Renold Quinlan in February this year.
The final match up pits, German Jurgen Brahmer against the unbeaten American Rob Brant. Brahmer who in his recent fights has been campaigning at Light-Heavyweight will come back down in weight to face Brant.
The tournament will see prize money of $50m split between the Super Middleweight and Cruiserweight contenders, with the winner in each weight division receiving the Muhammed Ali trophy.
The quarter finals will take place in September and October and the Semi finals in January, with the Finals taking place in May 2018.
